Persuasive Essay Topic Ideas - Getting Some Inspiration

A persuasive essay is just what it sounds like. It is an essay that is designed to persuade the reader to believe your point of view. These essays are usually written on controversial topics because there are two sides to these issues. You want to make sure that you choose an issue that has two sides to it and individuals can choose what side they believe in. This is a fun paper. You can write it with a lot of passion to prove your side of the issue.

When choosing a topic for this essay, you want to make sure that you choose a topic that is interesting and that you feel strongly about. It will be harder to write this essay if you sit the fence on the issue. You should either strongly agree or strongly disagree. If you can’t totally support either side, choose a different topic.

  1. Abortion: This is one of the most popular topics for persuasive papers. The idea whether women should have the right to choose whether or not to keep a baby they don’t want. Some people say that if they don’t want it they should carry it and give it up for adoption. Others say it’s her choice. Should we make a rape victim keep her attackers child? Aren’t there enough orphans without parents?
  2. Legalization of Marijuana: This current hot topic is one that has been in the news lately. With alcohol seen as a more dangerous drug and marijuana being used medicinally, it is a hard case to dispute. Many people feel that there are no controls in place to prevent misuse however, nobody is stopping you from drinking too much at the bar. Alcohol leads to many deaths and none have been reported for the use of marijuana but is this because they weren’t tested.
  3. Stem Cell Research: A lot has been discovered through stem cell research however, the opposition finds this immoral since the fetus has to be destroyed to conduct the research. This issue is like abortion because it deals with when the fetus has its own rights.

These are three very strong and very controversial topics. You can choose one of these and decide which side you agree with. Develop at least three reasons why you chose that side and start writing. Prove to your audience that your side is the right side.
